first post, worst post

To save myself from obsessing over the challenge of making a first post, I’m going to keep it short on personal information.* I’m Not Harriet, but that will do for now.

I’ll also not box myself in with any lofty goals or plans for this space. For about half a year I’ve been scribbling my thoughts about the books I read in various notebooks and it occurred to me that it might be nice to type them instead, both for convenience, but also to open the door of possibility to connecting with other readers.

Like most dedicated mystery readers, I’ve been reading, watching, and listening to the genre since I was a little child. I wanted to be a detective when I grew up. Alas, that didn’t happen, but I did become the next best thing:  an archivist, a job that means I get to solve tiny puzzles regularly. I often read through audiobooks at work and at home, and I often combine listening to mystery books with my other hobby of painting.

Connoisseurs of golden age books will immediately recognize the allusion of my title and deduce my love for Harriet Vane and Lord Peter. I love all the Queens of Crime,** and am hoping to read more 20th century detective fiction and write about it here. I also read contemporary mysteries, with a preference for series and especially ones with characters who grow and change over time.

* I’m not sure how much I want to reveal, anyway. Let’s keep it a mystery, for now.

**Well, love may be a strong word for my feelings towards Allingham, but I also haven’t read all of her books, so maybe it will flourish.
